Celebrities Who Rock Dreads
Dreadlocks continue to grow in popularity, with more and more celebrities taking the plunge to dread their hair. This week we’re going to take a look at some of the biggest stars who rock dreads.
At 65 years young, Stevie Wonder continues to rock an awesome head of dreads. The 25-time Grammy Award winning musician, singer, songwriter and record producer is one of the most iconic figures in the industry. Wonder lives up to his namesake by being just that. Shortly after he was born, Wonder lost vision in both of his eyes, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams of becoming a musician. Throughout the course of his career, he’s recorded more than 30 top ten U.S. hits and has sold more than 100 million albums and singles. Were dreadlocks to blame for his success?
Born September 1, 1996, Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman is one of the newer faces to sport dreadlocks. Coleman began her career at an early age with the dance crew Future Shock Oakland, which drew the attention of modeling agencies. This allowed her to pursue a modeling career working for Macy’s and Old Navy, at which point she auditioned for a Disney TV show known as Shake It Up.
We can’t talk about dreadlocked celebrities without mentioning Whoopi Goldberg. The world-renown actress rose to fame in the 1990 romantic fantasy movie Ghost, which netted her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Many people believe her decision to sport dreads is linked to spiritual and/or religious reasons, but this isn’t the case. In a recent interview, Whoopi revealed that she decided to wear dreads simply because it was easier. “I have dreads because I didn’t want to comb my hair! I’m not deep,” she said. Regardless of the reason, we love your dreads, Whoopi!
Okay, he may not sport them any longer, but American actor, model, director, producer and writer Jason Momoa used to have a mean head of dreads. He’s played in numerous TV shows and movies, some of which included the hit sci-fit show Stargate: Atlantis, Game of Thrones, The Red Road, and Conan The Barbarian. Momoa is also set to star in the upcoming DC Comics film Aquaman, as well as Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
